I have been buying a few 870s in the last couple of weeks. The first one I found is a 1970 870TB, which was the competition/trap gun with longer barrel (30') and deluxe figured stocks with the higher cheek piece. This one is a fixed MOD TRAP choke, VR barrel, 2.75' chamber.
Picked up another today I am particularly happy about. I presume it's much older than the previous gun ('tootsie roll' fore stock) and has a plain 30' barrel (by FAR my favorite barrels!) in fixed FULL (which I will probably have opened up to MOD). Oh, and it has a 3' chamber. This will become my primary duck gun.
Numerous sites online re: dating a Remington barrel by the letter code on the left side. I have not found these tables to work reliably and have always just called Remington and spoken with someone to get the date of manufacture.
Anyone know of a site to date a Remington by the serial number?
